Ten years ago today, I was in a Hindu temple on top of a mountain, wondering whether to have my head shaved. At Tirupathi temple, this is considered auspicious and they raise money by supplying the wig industry. According to my diary there was a 20:3 moustache ratio, lots of wigs for sale and I was accosted by a transvestite with his face painted purple. With 30-40 million pilgrims per year, it is the most visited holy site in the world. A ton of hair is collected daily.
It was a couple of days before I found out about the attacks in New York. I spent the next year in Africa, so I didn’t see the video footage until the first anniversary. I’ve spent several years out of the loop. After a few months upcountry in Vietnam, I emerged blinking, for some western food, and asked what had been going on. “Ummm, err…oh, Michael Hutchence died”. It was years before I found out Benny Hill was dead. I wonder what else I’ve missed whilst travelling?
