If Abene can boast one bona fida tourist attraction, then it would be Bantam Wora: the sacred tree. Or more correctly, the sacred trees, for it is six huge fromager’s (Kapok or cotton tree) that have fused together.
Fromager’s are always sacred in the Casamance, thought to be possessed by a genie that can bring good fortune if offered kola nuts, biscuits, milk, bread, or in Christian areas bounok (palm wine). Ladies with fertility problems (because it’s always the womans fault, right?) or lads wishing to win their upcoming football match will go and make an offering.
